A Depth of Beginning - Notes

It is essentially hermetic, but a good overview of working with Sephirot. His emphasis on Magic and magical ritual is reasonable, but the idea he puts forward is to be first steeped in Kabbalah and the Sephirot, plus the paths and the Hebrew letters, in addition one must know something about Astrology, at least the planets.

His effort, and his willingness to share his exploration into Kabbalah, bears much fruit. Firstly, it is an inspiration for me, showing me that there is, indeed, a middle way, a thread through which we can pass to make the Kabbalah and its practice more integrated into the modern lifestyle, without losing the essence of its teachings and its ultimate goal.

The Kabbalah Center’s goal (and it seems Bnei Baruch Kabbalah’s too) is to bring the person back to Judaic practice. But, for someone like me, who has practiced and is seeking a deeper involvement in the “practical” aspects of my life. To quote Levinas:

My effort always consists in extricating from this theological language meanings addressing themselves to reason. . . . [This] consists, first of all, in a mistrust of everything in the texts studied that could pass for a piece of information about God’s life, for a theosophy; it consists in being preoccupied, in the face of each of these apparent news items about the beyond, with what this information can mean in and for man’s life.

My intentions would be to extract the pieces that are useful in this context.
